Aliases: Long grain or side grain
Pros:
- Durable – lasts years longer than plastic and bamboo.
- Low maintenance – requires less frequent oiling over end grain cutting boards.
- Stain resistant – less susceptible to moisture, which can lead to staining.
- Warping– less susceptible to moisture, therefore the cutting board is less likely to warp, bend or crack.
- More affordable – edge grain cutting boards require less labour to make.
- Lighter – weigh less than end grain cutting boards, which is very important to keep in mind if you’re looking to use your board primarily for serving or everyday use.
- Visually striking – this type of cut reveals the wood’s beauty by showing off long, uninterrupted grain patterns.
- Customizing– due to how edge grain cutting boards are made, you can customize the board to your preference (length, width, thickness)
- Edge grain cutting boards require less upkeep compared to end grain cutting board. Since the grains of the wood are not exposed the wood will soak up less moisture, making it less likely to warp or crack.
On an edge grain cutting board, we glue long strips of wood together with the edge of the wood flipped sideways, showing the length of the grain. Our Edge grain cutting boards are more durable than face grain cutting boards that you purchase elsewhere.
Wood is a natural product that responds to temperature and humidity variations by expanding and contracting. Sometimes these changes may be noticeable in the physical appearance of the product.
Although every care is taken to ensure our products can handle temperature and humidity changes, the conditions of your home can affect the wooden products you buy from us. Your items can experience small movements and cracks as it adjusts – this is not a fault, but a natural occurrence within the fibers of a natural product.
Like all natural materials, wood has inherent disparities in color and grain pattern because of variations caused by nature, over which the supplier has no control.
We advise you to keep the product in consistent, stable conditions to minimize the effects of temperature and moisture change in the atmosphere.
As wood is a natural material, every piece of furniture will appear slightly different in finish either in color or pattern of wood.
